This video game system heralded the home video gaming industry.
Responding to sustained and increasing nostalgia for the brand, this video game system is reestablishing its position as a gaming and entertainment hardware company by launching the all-new unique PC/console hybrid.
After exceeding the funding goal and fueled by a huge response from brand loyalists, this video game system was committed to their vision of a new, world-class video computer system. Surfaceink’s engineering team worked closely to develop multiple prototypes, all handheld controllers, and the final production unit; all designed around the APU and exciting initial design concepts.
Our efforts included architecting the new computing system, designing for manufacturability, developing and executing the thermal strategy, integrating premium materials, refining the industrial design and CMF, guiding product compliance, managing key supplier relationships and more… all while maintaining the original vision of the experience.

New Product Introduction and production support
Crucial to maintaining the video games’ system retro-futuristic design roots, special care and attention went into specifying colors, materials, and finishes (CMF). A major signature moment was the faux wood paneling on the front of the console. Starting with an original concept by an industrial designer, Surfaceink’s ID team pushed the familiar but retro-futuristic shape with attention to detail when it came to colors, materials, and finishes (CMF). For example, a signature option was the faux wood paneling on the front of the console. We went through an exhaustive search to find a real wood veneer that was authentic and unique.
We also developed the game controllers. Working hand in hand, we made sure that they not only function well, but feel great in the hands. The updated wireless joystick was a particular pleasure to work on since the original version holds a sacred place in the hearts of all fans.
Integrating the classic logo as a softly glowing LED gave it a final modern touch.
Surfaceink’s multi-disciplined engineering and design team, consisting of mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers, and industrial designers, contributed to making the video game system a success. Building on the core of the chipset, our team designed a full feature set within a small and elegant form factor that is custom-built for today’s hybrid gaming, entertainment and productivity needs. Working in conjunction with the thermal design and software engineering teams we were able to achieve an efficient and quiet cooling system that can fit comfortably into any home environment.
Throughout the design & development process, Surfaceink developed and created check-models, cosmetic models, and developer prototypes. In addition, the team travelled to the manufacturer to help manage pre-production builds, create production documentation (SOPs), design assembly & test fixtures, as well as drive and instill industry leading practices for ongoing mass production success.
